Welcome
We're currently in soft launch...some things may or may not work...
Many cities purposefully obfuscate or hide data around fatal collisions. This is often in the mistaken belief that public roads demand privacy, or that the public has no interest in the data. Sometimes it is for political reasons, or to avoid liability. In some cases it is simply because the data is not collected or is not easily accessible. Sometimes it is mixed in with data that is legitimately not for public consumption.
The city employees that do this work often are passionate about it, but they are also often overworked and underfunded. Their work is sometimes neglected or ignored by politicians and the public. Important projects that would have large impacts on safety are shelved or delayed.
The goal of this project is to collect data and media reports about fatal collisions in the City of Toronto and eventually other jurisdictions in an effort to ensure that politicians, police, city staff, engineers, industry and the legal system are held accountable for the state of the road and infrastructure. Where possible, we endevour to work with the city and province to improve the data and the process of reporting and following up on fatal collisions.
Vision Zero is a multi-national road traffic safety project that aims to achieve a highway system with no fatalities or serious injuries involving road traffic. This needs to be data led, and the data needs to be public.
